Winter Rae: Rising Above Adversity and Making Music That Inspires

Independent singer-songwriter Winter Rae’s journey to becoming a successful artist has been one marked by tragedy and loss, but also by an unwavering dedication to her craft and her faith. Raised in a small town in Alabama, Winter had big dreams of making it in the music industry, but faced ridicule and skepticism from those around her. Nevertheless, she persisted, drawing on the values of honesty, loyalty, and compassion instilled in her by her upbringing to navigate the often cutthroat world of music with grace and determination.

Winter’s inspiration to write music came early, when she was living in a foster home and spent hours listening to her foster mother’s extensive collection of CDs. She began writing down the lyrics to her favorite songs, inadvertently teaching herself how to structure songs in the process. From there, she began writing her own music, with her first song written at the age of just 7. Despite facing significant obstacles in her life, including the loss of her grandmother and brother in the same year, Winter has never given up on her dreams. She credits her faith in God and her own resilience and determination for carrying her through the tough times.

In her music, Winter aims to inspire and uplift her listeners, promoting values such as self-sufficiency, self-love, and independence. Her album “Power,” was released in July 2022, is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication, and she is rightfully proud of her achievements thus far.

Winter’s creative process is a highly structured one, involving the use of a “mumble track” to lay down the melody and cadence before filling in the lyrics and adding harmonies and other elements. She is highly focused on creating a sound that is uniquely hers, and encourages other aspiring artists to do the same, rather than copying the styles of others.

Looking to the future, Winter sees a music industry that is increasingly open to independent artists, with fewer barriers to entry and more opportunities for creators of all genres and backgrounds to make their mark. She predicts that Atlanta, often dubbed “Black Hollywood” for its role in launching the careers of many Hip-Hop and Rap artists, will continue to be a hub of creativity and innovation, with new and diverse voices emerging in the coming years.

For anyone just starting out in music, Winter’s advice is to do your research, listen to those who have achieved the kinds of goals you aspire to, and take your time finding your own lane, style, and sound. By staying true to yourself and your vision, and by surrounding yourself with supportive and trustworthy people, you can rise above adversity and make music that truly inspires. Winter Rae is a testament to the power of perseverance, creativity, and faith, and her music is sure to continue inspiring listeners for years to come.
