Six extraordinary women in music for International Women’s Day

124 albums and songs submitted this week

In honor of International Women’s Day this week, 6 selections with  great female artists

Perro Callejero, álbum by Cecilia  Noël. The Wild Clam does it again – creates a party in a song – as she always does. Perro Callejero (street Dog)  showcases her unique combination of seduction, maturity, vocal and musical brilliance. But most of all, it is another one of her happy hits.  Video on YouTube. Stream on Spotify Apple Music, deezer, Tidal. Spanish.

La Verdad, single by Elis Paprika. Paprika is an independent Mexican musician, singer, songwriter, and activist from Guadalajara who has been recording alt rock, psych rock, and grunge since 2004. This song shows her soft side and carries you aloft like “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” – gently rocking along and loving every tranquil minute of it. Stream on Spotify. Spanish

Hickey King, single by Skating Polly. Yes it is punk, but it is approachable, intelligent punk. The lyrics explore the minefield of power dynamics in sex and relationships and explores – well, just how good and listenable and fun free punk can be in the hands of a master (mistress?). The release from their upcoming album Chaos County Line , stream it on Spotify, Apple Music and see the sey and surprising video on YouTube.

Travesia, album by Triálogo.   Travesía is an adventure through a shimmering world of original experimental jazz, made even more so by the angelic vocals of master pianist Soffía Ramírez. The Mexico-based quartet, made up of Ramirez,  Eleazar Soto, Gilberto Ríos and  Miguel Soto, is technically perfect and then goes way beyond just creating perfect music. Currently available for download at Triálogo ‘s website, https://www.trialogomusic.com/. Stream their first album Ultravioleta on Spotify

?Por Que Será?, single by La Sonora Dinamita. Fronted by 3 fabulous women – Margarita Vargas, Vilma Díaz, and Susana Velásquez, this 13-piece Columbian pop band now on tour in Mexico and headed for Tetro Diana in Guadalajara, has more energy than seems possible. They never stop and you won’t either. Stream on Spotify. Spanish.

Love as Projection, single by Frankie Rose.  Dreamy and scary at the same time, I have only heard one song from this album which is due out March 10, but that was enough. The drummer/guitarist/singer’s sixth solo album melds ’80s influences with contemporary electronic pop; the single “Anything” – which I listened to -sounds like it could be on the soundtrack of a John Hughes movie. Remarkable. Available March 10 on all major [platforms

BONUS.
