“Out of the Dark” by Trish and Thara

There are few stronger bonds than that of siblings, and the strings that tie sisters together are forged in something more powerful than iron. It only makes sense that more sisters would take this as a sign to go into music together, and in a wide array of popular examples (Aly and AJ Michalka, the HAIM sisters, and First Aid Kit) that’s exactly what they did. Up-and-comers Trisha and Thara have taken their sisterly bond and musical talent as a sign to follow in the footsteps of the musical sisters that have come before them, and even though they’ve only been creating music for a short period of time together (starting with releases in 2020), it’s clear that they’re hitting their stride as they slowly but surely grow into their own as both people and musicians.

The sisters’ latest single, “Out of the Dark,” came about as a birthday present for their mom, and the overall emotional wallop the track packs is an uncontested huge leap for the duo. From the full, finely-produced instrumental centered around a gorgeous piano melody to the vocals both in lead and harmony from Trisha and Thara, this is a track that owes a great deal to the musical journey that these two sisters have been on for the last three years. It’s worth noting that the single positions itself as a spectacular piece of orchestral crescendos, with the piano giving way to some phenomenal strings in the track’s back half, in particular. The overall growth of the single in its structure alone feels like something most musicians aspire to over their careers, but Trisha and Thara make it feel effortless in the best sense. It’s a song that could only come out of the love a child has for their mom, and the power of two sisters focusing on maternal emotions has clearly delivered a powerful new track for their careers.

It’s evident that 2023 is going to be a big year for Trisha and Thara, and their trajectory is only looking better with every new single they release —just last year, in an aim to keep their infectious, pop-centric melodies and lyrics, along with their airtight harmonies in total focus, the sisters united and ignited to create “Too Late Again,” a catchy EDM-focused banger that delivers some powerful synths and lo-fi verses. “Too Late Again,” which received airtime in thousands of retail stores across America, also awarded the sisters #2 on the Retail Music Charts for several consecutive weeks. If the power from such a hit single carries over, there’s no telling what’s in store for “Out of the Dark.”

Delivering something as emotional and personal as a song written for your mother’s birthday and revealing that side of yourself to your fans and general audiences takes guts — it’s not every day that musicians, especially younger singer-songwriters, will willingly show such a genuine and open side of themselves, but there’s something incredible at play with “Out of the Dark” as a result. Trisha and Thara aren’t your typical pop stars, they’re something much more tight-knit and powerful, and something tells me that by the end of 2023, we’ll all know what they’re capable of.
