March 2025 – Rising indie rock band The Nancys return with Tell Me To Be—a raw and
relentless grunge-inspired anthem about the chaos of figuring out who you are. With distorted
guitars, pounding drums, and confessional lyricism, the track embodies the disorienting speed
of youth—the feeling of running full-force into the unknown, desperate for direction.
Tell Me To Be is for anyone who’s ever felt lost in the chaos of growing up, navigating
relationships, expectations, and identity under the weight of societal pressures. It’s about the
pressure to define yourself before you even know who you are. Anchored by lyrics like, “tell me
how could I feel lost / golden cross and a silver flask / one at a time / run out of time,” the
track explores themes of faith, identity, relationships, and rebellion in a world that seems to
demand certainty. Fueled by frustration and reckless energy, the song is a cathartic scream for
answers in a time when everything feels like life or death.
“I wrote this song about feeling lost—about being young, in high school, and suddenly thrown
into all these new experiences,” shares songwriter Ella Norris. “Relationships, first loves,
friendships, too much alcohol—just figuring it all out while feeling like you have no clue
what you’re doing. I tied it into religion because that’s something I struggled with growing up,
especially being gay. I was in a relationship where it wasn’t okay to be who I was, and I felt like I
had to ask for permission just to exist. The chorus, “Tell me to be so I know,” is almost
directed at some higher power—like, just tell me what to do so I can do it right. But life doesn’t
work like that. You just have to live it, make mistakes, and learn along the way.”
As the third single from The Nancys’ debut EP, Tell Me To Be reveals a heavier, more urgent
side of the band, blending grunge-fueled angst with deeply personal storytelling. Perfect for fans
of Big Thief, The Growlers, and The 1975, this track is for anyone who’s ever felt like they’re
figuring it all out too late and running out of time too fast.
About The Nancys
The Nancys started with a simple recipe: good friends, great music, plenty of wine nights, and
the occasional interruption from their beloved cats. Based in Gainesville, the indie-rock band
combines the raw emotion of Big Thief with the genre-blending energy of The 1975, crafting
songs that feel both deeply personal and universally relatable. Their first single, Sweet,
cemented their place in the local scene, earning them a dedicated following drawn to their
introspective lyrics and laid-back yet dynamic sound. The Nancys continue to push boundaries
with their upcoming single, Tell Me to Be, a track that promises to take their sound to new
emotional heights. As The Nancys continue making waves, one question remains unanswered:
Who, exactly, is Nancy?
