While the acid jazz movement kicked off in London clubs during the mid ’80s, that phenomenon of mixing jazz and hip-hop eventually reached Stateside by the early ’90s. One of the most musically creative groups to emerge on the scene in 1994 was Jazzhole, an evolving collective of many of New York’s most accomplished live and studio musicians. While Jazzhole’s roster has changed since their self-titled debut, the band’s core songwriting and production trio Warren Rosenstein, Marlon Saunders, and John Pondel has not.
Jazzhole’s current release, Moonlight Mile, was the culmination of a road trip that started in Woodstock, making stops in NYC and Nashville, and ended up in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Peter Levin (Greg Allman, Blind Boys of Alabama) joined Jazzhole bassist David Inniss and drummer Mark Robohm in tracking at Fame Studios, while trumpet legend Randy Brecker and tabla master Prabhu Edouard added overdubs from remote locations.
The jazz / soul / hip hop excursion features the singles:
“Love…Life…” (Lord KCB),
“Moonlight Mile” (Marlon Saunders)
and “Damn I Miss NY” (Michelle Lewis, Rosa Russ and Marlon Saunders)

The First Single Video for “Love…Life…” is on YouTube –
“Love…Life…” is the latest release from soul jazz hip hop pioneers, Jazzhole. The video features Lord KCB – longtime Jazzhole rapper and former member of US3.
Love…Life… is the journey of seeing the positive in a world that is sometimes challenging. The video was shot in black and white, juxtaposing images of NYC and beaches in St. Petersburg. The video includes footage of band members Marlon Saunders, Mark Robohm and David Inniss, as well as guest tabla player, Prabhu Edouard, pianist Kevin DiSimone and vibes player, Isaiah Rosenstein.
Love…Life… blends together elements of hip hop, 1960s jazz and world music, with tabla master playing and also lending a vocal layer to the track. The sound is rounded out by DiSimone’s muted trumpet, a Jazzhole calling card from their acid jazz days.
Director Maria Niro (@ismarianiro) known for her innovative art films and documentaries, bringing a cinematic perspective to the music video artform. Stay tuned for more work from Niro, as she also directed the next single slotted for release, the title track from Moonlight Mile, Jazzhole’s seventh studio release.
