MUSIC SIN FRONTERAS  May 4, 2025

Iluka is riding a wave (or cantering horse)  with  her vocal power, her cowgirl/witch persona, and her legions of fans, now numbering just under 300,000 on Spotify.  Check her out.  I think she is going places , fast, at a full gallop.

Iluka-  rising fast and going places

I see that the Australian-born, US-based singer Iluka is rising fast.  Her recent release “Wings” is closing in on 5  million streams on Spotify on the heels of the 3 million+ “Cry Evil”.  About time. The more I listened to her music, the more I think she should be on stage  in front of tens of thousands of people in world tours and pushing a billion streams on platforms.  I think she will get there. Just look  and listen to what she does.

Her music, especially the most recent songs, are addictive earworms.  But they are also a deeply insightful cry of defiance, at exactly the time one is needed.   Her lyrics are  like brilliant, fierce  haikus.   For example, from “Woman Gone Mad”:

While the planet burns for the billionaires

Taking all they please as if the world was theirs

When last tree’s cut and the streams run bare

Let them eat their money—

What’ll they do then?”

And  from “Wings”:

“Mary Magdalene had some fun

Some called her a whore, some called her a nun

She  was the baddest bitch in Bethlehem

We’ll never know coz her story is written by men

Eve took a bite of the fruit from the tree

Brought death to the world with a sin so deep

So they lit those fires and they burned us down

What men will do when they fear our power

If you don’t know Iluka, you should. She  is a singer-songwriter originally from Sydney, Australia, now based in the United States. Her music  has been  described as “retro pop meets gospel soul,”  but I add to that  a kind of march- of- power beat in some of her songs. She blends influences ranging from Dolly Parton to Stevie Nicks, and her vocal style can be compared to Adele and Janis Joplin. But she also brings in powerful drumming and story-telling that gives her songs a defiance that is unique, and makes them addictive.

Growing up in the Blue Mountains near Sydney, Iluka was immersed in horses and music from a young age, inspired by her father, a songwriter and guitar maker. By the age of seven, she was already recording her own songs with her father, and by fifteen, she had enough material for several albums.

Iluka’s songwriting is soulful, urgent, demanding.  It  and her provocative style quickly set her apart in local shows. Over time, she gained wider recognition, especially after her viral cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” which showcased her timeless vocals and fresh perspective on classic material. Her recent  releases “Cry Evil”,  “Girl on the Run”, “Woman Gone Mad”,  and “Wings” bring this out, giving the songs – and herself – a power beyond the lyrics.

Her debut album, Queen of Turbulent Hearts, has charted on U.S. radio lists, and her recent single “Cry Evil!” stands as a bold anthem of female empowerment. Armed with her White Falcon Gretsch guitar and a distinctive visual style described as “Dolly meets Stevie,” Iluka is riding a wave (or cantering horse)  with  her vocal power, her cowgirl/witch persona, and her legions of fans, now numbering just under 300,000 on Spotify.  Check her out.  I think she is going places , fast, at a full gallop.
