HOT HALF DOZEN 9.9.25

Americana, devastating pop, ranchera (yes - ranchera), blues and cumbia. We move around a lot on this week's music recommendations.

Short week, only 60 songs submitted for review.

Ember, single by Lurleen Ladd. Proving that there is life after 40 for singers, Luleeen Ladd’s album, No Goin’Back.  Although she went through earlier careers in healthcare, social work, and entrepreneurship, a trip to Nashville threw a switch inside of her, and she took off like a rocket.  Ember is from her 2019 Magnolia and Azalea Dreams.  She rocks, pops, R&B’s, and gets down, making you move.  Check out her other albums. Stream on Spotify and major platforms.

Aguaráchate, single/video  Monsieur Periné.  Always fun and always surprising.  Full of color, laughter, and move your body cumbia.   The Grammy-winning duo Catalina García y Santiago Prieto have a knack for great happy party music, and Aguaráchate,  (Take a Break) embodies that in spades.  Spanish. Stream on major platforms.

American Wasteland, single Whitney Tai.  Whitney Tai is one of the most underappreciated songwriters, singers, arrangers, and entertainers of our time.  From her early album Metamorphosis in 2015, to “American Wasteland”, Tai marshals a power that travels to stars and galaxies and yet carries searing heartbreak and profound hurt.  American Wasteland will grip you, grab you, spin you around the moon and pull you back down into the depths of yourself.  Stunning.  Beautiful.  Stream on all major platforms and buckle your seatbelt.

Sailor Suit, single by Larry Keel and Jon Stickley. A tale of the pleasures of childhood and the memories of adults.  Sort of Appalachian, sort of Americana, sort of tongue in cheek, and totally fun. Sail to your memories with them.

Maldita Bellatera, single by Lila Dons and Alica Villareal.  With the party cheer of ranchera, this song tribute to Paquita la del Barrio, the legendary ranchera singer known for ranchera, is a joy to listen to, as two of Mexico’s best female singers deliver it from their hearts —with a twinkle in their eyes and a lot of foot tapping.  Spanish. Stream everywhere.

Ahora Te llamaa Ex, single by Ana Barbara and Estibaliz.  Many people have recorded this song, but their take on it has a sly grin and a bouncy Caribbean beat to it. Barbara and Estibaliz turn it into a singing conversation.  It is party music, but much more. Spanish.  Steam on major platforms.
