“I Only Dance When I’m Drunk” by Troy Castellano

“I Only Dance When I’m Drunk” by Troy Castellano, isn’t the average country song, but at the same time it’s typical of many, and that is only traditional of country artists, so while it’s not average per say, it’s not the first time the topic has been explored in either rock or country songs of the past. But Castellano comes with his own brand of funny lyrics about something not always exactly funny. This is a song that goes both ways and meets with pure enjoyable sarcasm not to be taken too seriously, and once you’re over that, it makes all sense.

Castellano is a rising artist growing into his own awards, with lots of streams and shows under his belt, but aside from the numbers game, the music is what counts, and he makes country and pop sensibilities work so well together. This takes some fine artistry, and the musicians are all seasoned vets with backgrounds to show for an utmost carefully curated delivery. The number of streams garnered by “I Only Dance When I’m Drunk” shows ears are picking up and running with it, and the place to go is the album from which it comes, the appropriately named Beautiful Blur.

The concept of “I Only Dance When I’m Drunk” is completely depicted in the title, but there’s more to it than meets the eye, as the backing players and the lyrics and melody take it over the top with more to reckon with about it. It starts off at top tempo and wastes no time getting into the story of what happens when you drink a little too much, and dancing is the result, even when you can’t. The liquid courage kicks in and we have a situation worthy of a song full of laughter and cheer, even though it takes being tipsy to arrive at.

“I Only Dance When I’m Drunk’ is a title you can’t forget, with a song behind it you’ll find to be as contagious as country music gets, and Castellano makes a song with that country timbered vocal prowess. The sheer laughter with a touch of seriousness is similar to a dopamine charge that doesn’t wear right off like usual, and that is only tipping the iceberg of this cool number. If it weren’t for the political climate, this might not be as soothing, as it provides true escape from the polarized antics of the day.

If you like country pop-oriented music wrapped in comedy, you’ll get a kick out of “I Only Dance When I’m Drunk” as much as the next enthusiast, and it travels miles in every musical direction. This song is radio ready and accessible for the mass market, rather than a commercial blunder. The musicianship is worth looking into as well, as the talent here is staggering and hard to come by the names of alone, and it’s topped off by the renowned Grammy nominated engineer Bobby Holland. This feelgood number is so enormously satisfying you can’t make it up.
