The two-day recording session and video shoot took place at Revolver Recordings in Westlake Village, CA. The duo invited Moog Music into their creative process as they explored and designed synth sounds in the studio. For the EP recording, the duo set up a handful of Moogs in a semi-circle in the studio and just started adding textures to the two songs, “Elephant” and “Surrender.” They used Moog’s One, Omni, and MiniMoog which allowed them to create the exact sound they wanted to achieve, and they couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.
“Flight to London stands out for their approach to synthesis through real musicianship and craftsmanship,” says Joe Richardson, President, Moog Music. “Their use of instruments like Moog One, Moog Muse, and the Minimoog Model D is thoughtfully integrated into the heart of their songs. They bring out the best in the music and the best in the instruments and that’s why it was important to work with them.” Adds the duo, “Moog’s team have been incredibly supportive and matched our excitement throughout the process,” says the duo. “We’ve both used Moog instruments throughout our careers, and collaborating with such an iconic brand in the music industry has been a real honor.”
Flight To London was born from a deep obsession with ’80s icons like Tears For Fears, Phil Collins, and Depeche Mode. Their album is a masterclass in New-stalgia. They released their debut album Instructions For Losing Control(earthprogram/Virgin Music) on November 21 – listen HERE.
The 10 tracks explore themes of modern relationships, digital-age anxiety, and the peculiar nostalgia we feel for times we may have never actually experienced. The songs are meticulously crafted, featuring lush harmonies that cascade over vintage synth textures, unexpected key changes that catch listeners off guard, and production that balances analog warmth with digital precision.
Flight To London released their debut song “No One’s Forgiven” on September 19 and premieredthe music video withMagnet Magazine (Watch it HERE) whosaid, “Flight To London’s fine-tuned facsimile of synth pop’s ’80s heyday surpasses mere tribute-minded affectation. Credit highly skilled co-conspirators Jimmy McGorman and Robb Vallier…their impeccably crafted debut LP, Instructions For Losing Control, humanizes its digital precision with an analog warmth for a nostalgia trip that’s strikingly of-the-moment.” They released “Walls” on October 24 – Listen HEREand featuresLA session legend Charlean Carmon (Harry Styles, Carrie Underwood, Leonard Cohen) on vocals, Foo Fighter’s Rami Jaffe on Hammond Organ, Clavinet, and Rhodes piano, Jon Button (The Who, Rachael Yamagata, Sheryl Crow) on bass, Eric Fawcett (Pharrell Williams, N.E.R.D, Spymob) on drums, and Jack Karlson’s Democracy Manifest which underlays the track.
Flight To London was created out of equal parts desire and frustration: the desire to create music like the melodic, densely produced, sonically adventurous songs they loved in the ’80s, and the frustration of listening to their original compositions being altered by other artists. Both have successful careers, McGorman as a musician, songwriter, and producer with credits including work with Goo Goo Dolls (he’s in their band – see him perform on NPR’s Tiny Desk HERE), New Radicals, Weezer, Avril Lavigne, and Gwen Stefani and Vallier, who’s collaborated with Dave Stewart, Gin Blossoms, and Sabrina Carpenter among others but after years of writing and producing for other artists, “we’re finally pouring our hearts into our own long-awaited dream: our debut album,” says the duo. “Every track is a raw snapshot of the past twelve months, capturing who we are as musicians, friends, and people navigating this complex world together. These songs carry our hearts and our hurt.”
The album’s title, Instructions For Losing Control, captures their philosophy perfectly: in a world that demands constant control and optimization, Flight To London creates space for beautiful messiness. The cover art for the album was also thoughtfully chosen. Robb found a collage by artist Robert Pollard (lead singer of the band Guided By Voices) so they reached out to Robert, and he gracefully agreed to let them use the artwork.
