In an industry that often rewards certainty, yet is known for its instability, Brian De Rozan has built his career embracing the unknown and challenging himself to immerse in psychologically complex roles. His path to acting began with wonder and curiosity. “As a kid, Star Wars grabbed me from the opening shot. It lit up my imagination and made storytelling feel limitless.” What started as childhood awe evolved into something far more personal. “That spark turned into a love of film and performance, but acting gave me something deeper: a place to explore human behavior, perspective, and connection. It’s the one space where I’ve always felt both challenged and completely at home.”
De Rozan grew up in the midwest and identifies as biracial. Nothing about his upbringing was easy for him but that laid the foundation for a lot of the roles he would end up playing and has said that his characters “usually face big challenges, often within, that they try to overcome. For me, that includes identity. It’s something I used to shy away from when I was younger. Now, I embrace it. It’s one of my superpowers for sure.” At the start of his career, that big challenge was leaving the Midwest for Los Angeles and stepping into an industry that can often be overwhelming. He reflects that “I wasn’t just chasing roles, I was proving to myself that persistence and growth mattered more than certainty.”
His first film was Pure, a short film where he played Nathan, a mixed race business executive who is confronted with his own prejudices in a random encounter after he is rejected by his fiance’s parents. Looking back, De Rozan has said that his confidence grew but he also realized he had a lot to learn and has said that “today I’d bring more confidence and intentional choices, though that experience was invaluable to my growth.” Through the early years of his career, he found that he had a natural authority and that led to him being frequently cast as a police officer or a detective. He reflected that “they came naturally on camera, though I did not initially see myself that way.” But as that repetition continued, a realization dawned on him. “Over time I realized my presence carried more weight than I had known, both on screen and off, and that shifted how I viewed myself as an actor.”
An eye opening role for him was when he played a controversial Police Officer on the CBS hit television series S.W.A.T. “I played a police officer on S.W.A.T. that I viewed as justified in his actions, but audiences saw him as a bully,” De Rozan recalls. But in that performance he found an invitation to navigate the tension between intention and reception. “It was a reminder that perspective shifts once a performance meets the audience, and that complexity is always worth exploring.”
Since then, De Rozan has found that he gravitates towards unsettling material in many different genres including sci-fi, thriller, and socially driven narratives. “Psychologically complex roles in morally gray spaces challenge me. They demand deep emotional and physical investment, which can be intimidating, but that’s what makes them compelling and pushes me as an artist.” It is a deliberate resistance to being defined too early. “By choosing roles that challenge expectations and by finding depth in every character I play. Staying curious and intentional about my choices has helped me avoid being confined to one type.” That’s why De Rozan always looks at a character’s psychology first, so he can understand them from the inside out. “After preparing, I take a brief private moment of silence to connect with their thoughts, circumstances, and objective.” This ritual reflects his larger philosophy in embracing identity, and trying to understand the character as well as he understands himself. “I approach every character with empathy first, looking for their perspective and motivation. At the same time, honesty means not denying their flaws or circumstances. The balance comes from respecting their humanity while staying truthful to the story.”
He found himself at an emotional peak in the independent film The Color Happy, where De Rozan plays a man with a criminal past who finds redemption when he’s assigned to mentor a young fatherless boy, but then confronts a devastating loss. He still embodies the natural authority of his earlier roles but his character is a lot gentler, and a lot more vulnerable. “In The Color Happy, my character Damon learns a child he was mentoring has been killed. He moves from denial to acceptance, and that journey carried real emotional weight because he saw himself in the boy and lost hope with him.” I took a major toll on him but he reflects that “It required going to a vulnerable place, but experiences like that deepen empathy and remind me why honest storytelling matters.”
De Rozan has also worked behind the camera and founded his own production company Videohead Films, where he produced a number of short films with the hope of making progress towards feature opportunities. He has found that wearing multiple heats sharpened his instincts as an actor. “Working behind the camera has deepened my understanding of storytelling and performance. It gives me the confidence to take greater risks on screen because I see how choices serve the whole piece, not just the moment.”
In the coming years, De Rozan is once again ready to venture into the unknown and take on new kinds of roles. “I’m ready to explore characters defined by sophistication and precision, people with a strong command of language and presence, such as an attorney or a CIA operative navigating high stakes negotiation.” He also wants to continue his exploration of vulnerability. “I’d also welcome the opportunity to anchor a grounded love story and explore emotional intimacy in that space.” He is currently pitching his first feature script Magic and has another script on the way.
Brian De Rozan’s journey has been one presence, perspective, growth, and diving head first into psychological complexity, yet still maintaining the sense of wonder and curiosity that he got when he was first introduced to a galaxy far far away.
