HOT HALF DOZEN 4.17.26

Sme of the gems from SXSW where Mexican songs made a big splash. Plus a few of the songs sent to me - dream pop, R&R, cumbia, love songs.

200 songs, albums, videos submitted for review, plus gems from SXSW

Canción sin miedo single by Vivir Quintana and Mon  Laferte. A regional Mexican feminist anthem about gender‑based violence, widely recognized as Quintana’s landmark track and the core to her live identity. She played it at the FONO/Universal México “Música: No Borders” showcase at SXSW last week. Beautifully composed to inspire you and get you humming, even if you don’t follow the Spanish. Stream everywhere.

I’ll  Protect You, video by Elsten Torres.     Whew! The  King of Love Songs brings a Buddhist flavor to his most powerful song yet. I am happy he did a video instead of only an audio release. The images of Torres and two women kneeling blindfolded in a Japanese temple, which background his deeply loving lyrics, will make you shiver; it is so beautiful. He will protect them…and they protect him.  YouTube.

Cuando Una Mujer, single by Mariangela. The Mexican‑born, Texas‑based singer has delivered a very danceable cumbia norteña empowerment cut.  Whether you dance or not or follow the Spanish, you will love the happiness of this music…. and her laughter in it.  Stream on major platforms.

Pagana, single by RIA  Emerging songwriter‑artist flagged in SXSW 2026 previews as “breaking out” with this single, she cleverly combines R&B and regional sounds in a danceable tune, but with a slight sadness to it, coming from her low-key vocals.   If you understand the Spanish, you will catch the message;  if not,  you will enjoy the seemingly simple but really intricate arrangement and hooks.  Spanish.  Stream on major platforms.

Me Caigo , single by Sofish . Guadalajara‑raised Sofía López Jiménez’s electropop/R&B song, described in “Mexico at SXSW 2026” coverage as the viral track that carried her from TikTok into the SXSW lineup.  The song is both fascinating and enjoyable.   She brings together French house / trip‑hop en español, sensual lyrics that evoke a romantic night on the beach, giving it a cinematic feel rather than straightforward pop.  Spanish. Stream on all major platforms.

Las Almas, single by Valsian (feat. Rubytates)
Dream‑pop duo from Mexico City with Eunice Guerrero on vocals; this song is highlighted in this collaboration with the Rubytates band to form a smooth fusion of Rubytates’ melodic, atmospheric notes with Valsian’s emotional sensibility.  The blend of the two talents is seamless and hypnotic; Valsian’s emotional, atmospheric writing and Eunice’s expressive vocals, now channeled into a shared universe with Rubytates.  A standout at SXSW2026. Spanish. Stream on all major platforms.

BONUS. Enamorada by Vivir Quintana (feat. Majo Aguilar) – Norteño/Tex‑Mex‑leaning love song to prove that she doesn’t just do protest songs while highlighting the power of female voices in contemporary Mexican music.
