Opening track “Ultimate Freak-Off Party,” inspired by the Diddy Combs case, sets the tone immediately. Rather than leaning into shock value, Alexander keeps things light and theatrical, driven by a catchy pop groove and standout saxophone solos. “Save It For Another Time” follows with a more expansive approach, weaving together different musical ideas while maintaining the album’s narrative-driven vocal style. I love this incredibly inspiring song, it’s so good it speaks volumes for itself and Rob Alexander.
“Bennie and The Hepcats” is one of the more imaginative moments. A tongue-in-cheek sequel to a classic rock-era archetype, blending retro piano pop with glam-tinged flair. The title track reinforces Alexander’s songwriting voice with a respectful nod to its influences, while “Magic Dragon” pushes further outward, hinting at a genuine individuality. The song itself weaves its own magic, spinning you into the next one, as you try and savor it for as long as possible.
Throughout, the album’s consistency in craft keeps things engaging. Each track feels intentional, whether leaning toward minimal arrangements or fuller compositions. “The Love Of My Life” stands out for its expressive guitar work and emotional resonance, and “A Little Of This” reinforces that same blend of homage and originality without feeling derivative. This includes the titles track, “It Just So Happens” which serves its overall purpose and earns its place without hogging the track list. I like this one because of the classic Big Band feel. You just feel the class throughout the album at this point, as each song carries its own special weight.
The emotional core emerges most clearly in the ballads. “Don’t Be Afraid Of This Love” delivers a sweeping, heartfelt performance, but it’s “The Hurt Man” that leaves the deepest impression. Tackling the subject of child abuse from a personal and reflective angle, the song turns long-buried experiences into something cathartic. A Sobering moment that makes you think and reflect on society.
The rest is all gravy, with “Wild Love Ways,” “Ready To Love Again,” and “Be That Way,” maintaining a steady level of quality. Closing with “Lonely Avenue,” a stripped-back piano-and-vocal performance, Alexander ends on a quiet, introspective note that feels earned.
It Just So Happens succeeds by balancing reverence for classic pop traditions with a desire to tell stories that feel personal and contemporary. The influences are evident but never overpowering, resulting in an album distinctly that of the Rob Alexander himself.
