Interview with Su-Chi

Q. Your journey began in a small suburban town outside Los Angeles before evolving into a deeply personal artistic path. How have your early experiences shaped both your storytelling and the emotional core of your music today?

Su-Chi:

I grew up in Camarillo, Ca…a small suburban town just outside of Los Angeles. Neighborhoods with lots of white picket fences and high expectations to become someone’s wife by 22 and have a mortgage and kids by 25. But from a young age I always knew that my path would be different. I knew I was a storyteller and that I held a hunger to observe and connect with people, to make art that would evoke vulnerability and promote healing.

My passion for connection led to theatre and acting classes and eventually to writing my stories through music and visual arts.

So, I became an art school dropout and blindly but wholeheartedly moved to Los Angeles. I taught myself basic guitar and piano in order to develop my songwriting and was in acting classes when I wasn’t in the studio. I’d ride my bike from studio to studio and every week was a hustle but absolutely worth it.

Q. Your sound blends cinematic elements with acoustic folk-pop and touches of R&B and hip-hop. How did this multi-dimensional style develop, and what draws you to creating music that feels like a “movie scene”?

Su-Chi:

The heart of my music is rooted in a soulful folk feel embedded with singer-songwriter pop. I am definitely influenced by lots of songwriters and soul singers…Tracy Chapman, Etta James, Tom Petty, Jackson Browne, John Mayer, Noah Khan, Jon Bellion, Amy Winehouse and Lauryn Hill; just to name a few.

In developing my sound, my love for cinema has definitely influenced my artistry. I tend to dance through different musicalities and like to try to build bridges between styles. Currently I would describe my sound as: Cinematic Acoustic Folk Pop with elements of RnB and Hip Pop…I want my listeners to feel like they’re entering a movie scene when they play my music.

Q. Looking back at your recent releases and collaborations, what moments would you say marked a turning point in your visibility and connection with your audience?

Su-Chi:

In 2024 Priceline was released with Devvon Terrell which marked a big turning point in visibility as an Artist and Songwriter. I was able to follow that momentum with Wallflower and IRL which really connected me with a growing fan base, which I refer to as THE BUTTERFLY NATION.

In 2025 I was featured on INDEPENDENT’S DAY as an Artist and songwriter with Futuristic for my collaborative record BEAUTIFUL DAY.

Q. Your upcoming single MERCEDES signals a new chapter. What does this record represent for you creatively and emotionally at this stage of your journey?

Su-Chi:

Up next is MERCEDES and no set date yet but it’s looking really positive for release at the top of July.

Q. MERCEDES explores themes of self-worth and navigating a difficult breakup. How did you approach translating such complex emotions into a song that feels both personal and empowering?

Su-Chi:

Mercedes is an empowering breakup song that I had the honor of making with one of my creative partners Korey Keys and had the record mixed and mastered by Devvon Terrell.

This is a record about having the courage to stand up for and to choose yourself after a break-up that was…messy. It honors the anger and the heartbreak and confusion that we go through as people in these tough situations that make us stronger (if we allow).

Q. You’ve collaborated with creatives like Korey Keys and Devvon Terrell on this project. How did these collaborations influence the final sound and direction of the record?

Su-Chi:

Mercedes is an empowering breakup song that I had the honor of making with one of my creative partners Korey Keys and had the record mixed and mastered by Devvon Terrell.

Q. Visual storytelling seems to play an important role in your artistry. How do you envision the visual world around MERCEDES, and how does it complement the song’s narrative?

Su-Chi:

There will absolutely be visuals that help unfold the story of MERCEDES…possibly a full video too but one step at a time 🙂

Q. You have an intimate live performance coming up with SoFar Sounds in Los Angeles. What kind of experience are you aiming to create for the audience in that setting?

Su-Chi:

Next show is SoFar Sounds LA on May 14th.

This is going to be an intimate acoustic night that will showcase some favorites (such as IRL) and lots of unreleased music. So it’s going to be a special night of what’s to come and what I’ve been building…as I like to say “let’s get vulnerable” LA.

Q. You’ve begun to cultivate a growing community you call “THE BUTTERFLY NATION.” What does that community represent to you, and how does it influence the way you create and share your music?

Su-Chi:

I was able to follow that momentum with Wallflower and IRL which really connected me with a growing fan base, which I refer to as THE BUTTERFLY NATION.

Q. As an independent artist balancing creativity and business, what have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned about trusting your process and building your career on your own terms?

Su-Chi:

Every artist has their journey and I trust the timing of mine. My main goals are growing my fan base and business so that I can solely put my attention on building more of my artistic universe…a safe space for fellow wallflowers.

My creative soul is hungry to connect with the world and I am incredibly grateful to be in the position to do exactly that…my 10 day jobs, early mornings and late nights are just part of the story and keep me grounded in my mission as a woman in music and business.

Q. Looking ahead, what are your priorities as you continue to grow, both in expanding your audience and in building the artistic universe you’ve envisioned?

Su-Chi:

I just want to make art that lasts longer than I do that promotes vulnerability and healing…that is the type of impact I hope to have.

Q. As your presence continues to grow, how has media recognition played a role in your journey so far?

Su-Chi:
I was featured in Vents Magazine in 2025.
