  • “When music is great you want to hold it into the moment. Let it be told that L.A. has its own guitar slinger, Ray Goren” – Rock Bands Of L.A.

Experience the Solo Guitar Greatness that is Ray Goren, performing songs from his new EP Free,  at Genghis Cohen, 740 N. Fairfax Ave., Wednesday, March 22. Set time: 9:00 pm. Tickets $10. Info:  (323) 653-0640 or www.genghiscohen.com. Ray will also be performing there Wednesday, April 5 and Friday, May 12.

“At Genghis Cohen he played solely with the aid of a sampler for multi tracks and rhythms to showcase soon-to-be-released new songs. Those who came were won over by the guitarist/singer’s talent and disarming personality. Equally arresting in a different way was techno pop “Manners” that was well suited for the present-day pop scene and also included ripping guitar,” writes L.A. Jazz Scene in a review of Ray’s January show. The Los Angeles Beat attended Goren’s Genghis Cohen gig in January, writing, “Last Saturday night, Ray Goren performed in a solo show at Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles. Showcasing his new-found mastery of writing his own songs, as well as his treatment of a few covers, the show was well-received by the packed room.”

Ray Goren Takes His Music  A Different Direction With New EP, FREE

Dynamic young musician Ray Goren embraces elements of New Jack Swing, Hip Hop, Soul, R&B, and Rock on his new six-song EP, Free.  “Manners” quickly catches the listener with it’s quirky keyboards (played by Goren, as are all instruments on the album) and rap-soul vocals, as Ray makes his intentions known to the opposite sex:

“I ain’t got no manners, And you ain’t got a clue, Tonight it’s all on you”

Title track “Free” features a melodic opening refrain and some soulful Goren vocals, augmented by Ray’s ever-present guitar. “I just wanna be free now,” Goren sings, in a sound reminiscent of seventies’ greats Bad Company. “Don’t Know Better” is both funky and soulful, Goren singing, “I ain’t tryin’ to play, I just want your lovin’ every day” while displaying more of the guitar prowess the Southern California-based teen is renowned for. “Emergency ” is more soulful seduction, Goren singing, “it’s an emergency, every time you move you seem to capture me”, with a catchy electric piano and a sweet guitar solo. “Back To Me” features a pretty, flowing, soulful sound with Goren’s high-octave vocal giving the tune an Old-School nineties’ feel, “you’ll come around…back to me.” The disc ends “Love Gone Wrong,” a sweet-sounding duet between Goren and L.A. vocalist Hewan, calling to mind comparisons with classic soul hit “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye and Tami Terrell.
