Munroe Releases Video for “Fake Out”

Debut LP Oblivion Out Now – Premiered via AfterEllen

Toronto-based Munroe has released a cinematic new video to accompany track “Fake Out” from the artist’s recent full length release Oblivion. Directed by American artist, writer, and filmmaker, Laura Maxwell, the visual is a music video meets short film that tells the story of a young woman escaping life in the landscape of a small North American factory town. “Fake Out” represents an examination of the female self and the many facets of female identity. It is also the director’s personal ode to mortality, loss, and the many regenerations of self we experience in our lifetime.

Munroe on her collaboration with Laura: “I’m such a fan of her work as an artist, I trust her as a storyteller, so when she approached me about this video, I put myself entirely in her hands. It was the first narrative video for something of mine that I’ve been in – which had previously been an uncomfortable prospect for me. But I believe in Laura, and she approached it like a dreamy short film, which made it fun. From concept to execution, it was her vision. I went along for the ride.”

Released in summer 2017, Oblivion sees the artist in new form with a bigger sound and more cinematic collection of tracks as a natural progression from the “gorgeous, melancholy” (Exclaim!) offering on her previous EP. Sonically influenced by spaghetti westerns and 60s film scores, the artist also cites the presence and intimacy of vocalists such as Vashti Bunyan and Angel Olsen as musical inspiration.
