Mark May to release new album Deep Dark Demon

Deep Dark Demon, the 7th cd from the Mark May Band drops on July 17, 2020 on Gulf Coast Records

Mark’s last release the highly acclaimed album Blues Heaven hit #6 on the Billboard Blues Album Chart and remained there for 5 weeks. There is much that can be said about his music, but there’s one thing for sure, it’s all dripping with his rich love for the blues. His astonishing live shows featuring dynamic twin leads and dual harmony guitar work are the perfect complement to Mark’s smooth vocals.

For over 20 years, Mark May has made a name for himself in the Texas blues scene and has been perfecting his craft performing at blues clubs, bars, and festivals.

The Mark May Band has performed at numerous festivals across the country including Telluride Blues and Brews, Mississippi Valley Blues Fest, King Biscuit, Tremblant International Blues Festival, Dallas International Guitar Show, Chenango Blues Festival, and many more. Mark May also had the opportunity to be the opening act for The Allman Brothers Band on their 1997/98 Amphitheater tour and went on to join up with ABB guitarist Dickey Betts and his band Great Southern for several tours and an album. He has also been featured in Blues Review, Guitar Player, Guitar World, Vintage Guitar, Tone Quest and other major publications.

To describe some artist’s music with one word would be easy but to do that with Mark May’s music would be impossible.

In Review: from the title of the album, Deep Dark Demon, one may think this album would be dark and brooding, with overtones of tragic lore and stories of had life… in fact it is a celebratory anthem in multiple tracks,  blues explosion, filled with joy and power. There are some standard blues styling, but all with Mark May’s vibrant originality. From the beginning to end, this album has stunning style, warmth and, at times, some delightfully lighthearted moments. I would say his crowning achievements on this album is the clarity of the solo work in guitar, clear and harmonic tones supported by steady rhythms. If this is what he sounds like in the studio, then as stated, his live performances must be heavenly.

It all started with a musical family with his older brother Ken teaching him guitar and introducing Mark to such artist as the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. Mark’s country music background with his mother and uncle being country/bluegrass singers and songwriters seemed to make his move into a musical life a natural direction.

The former Dickey Betts and Great Southern guitarist and vocalist found the blues when his aunt lent him a copy of B.B. King’s “Live in Cook County Jail” when he was just 11 years old. He took to it and ran.
