Rohan Solomon – “Victoria’s Secret”

And all that she wants, she says, I just want to be me, Rohan Solomon sings in his new single, “Victoria’s Secret”. A follow-up to his pop/adult contemporary “Keep Holding On”, the New York City-based singer/songwriter/audio engineer, continues to turn out songs that have real depth and meaning. Echoes of his rock days seep into the music bedrock, but it’s Soloman’s portrait of a lady in emotional disarray that strangely calms the listener. Be it her anxieties or his genuine delivery, “Victoria’s Secret” is very worthy to have on your radar.

Originally from New Delhi, India, Solomon is the former lead singer of Cyanide, an alternative indie rock band. He’s currently in a three-piece rock band, By Chance, too, but still releasing solo pieces. “Victoria’s Secret” has semblances of rock, pop and Americana. I can easily foresee this song on a playlist of music fans that enjoy bands and artists like Train, Sting, Pete Yorn, Goo Goo Dolls, The Fray and more. When Solomon sings, he sings with grace, a quiet dignity. His voice is magnetic. I sensed no accent, but he does brandish a unique undercurrent of artistry and poeticism.

The track has diverging elements of guitars – first with a rambling acoustic guitar. It’s sweet, like a honey-dipped, amber morning. As he sings and the story begins to emerge, Solomon’s voice hovers over a bolder electric guitar. The electric guitar isn’t swift, but it’s moving the song along quicker than the previous acoustic guitar strings. The drums are very hushed, but the bass guitar perks up here and there. It’s a bit more hidden, but it’s here. As the instrumentation bubbles and sounds spry, some very moving piano keys and assumed strings further the listening experience. It’s all very polished and wonderful.

She has to be fancy, she has to be neat, just another red carpet, thrown under her feet, Solomon continues, his voice steady and even in its timbre. One notch more and he sings, and she’s living in a circle that won’t let her break free, and all that she wants she says, I just want to be me. As a listener, I could just imagine the exhaustion this Victoria must have. The constant feeling of being someone you’re not; experiencing the daily routines, and day-in-and-day out and being bored with it all, but maybe secretly, slowly dying inside because of pain and social anxieties. That’s the theme of course- secrecy. You don’t know how I live my life, he sings of her.

Solomon doesn’t hold back in this song. His words and especially his voice garners an instant rapport with the listener. His story, tragic as it may seem, reveals much more about society’s pressures and even the social media influencers we often put on a pedestal. He taps into a world of feeling not enough, of being less than we intend. In doing so, Rohan Solomon’s “Victoria’s Secret” is a beacon of hope and exceptional songwriting. It’s definitely a song to chase down the rabbit hole to listen to more.
