Justine Covault launches Red on Red Records, a new Boston-based record label

Red on Red Records is Justine’s latest adventure in rock and roll collaboration.

Covault describes the label’s inception and her motivation: “The idea sprang from a conversation I had with Lou Mansdorf of the fantastic Rum Bar Records label. He’s been a friend and mentor to me, and he encouraged me to take the energy I have for collaborating with and supporting fellow rock musicians and other creative types and start my own venture. I’ve learned a lot in recent years in developing my two bands (Justine and the Unclean, Justine’s Black Threads), building a successful monthly residency that spotlights talented guests and collaborative musical combos (The Mess Around), and co-founding a female-powered regional rock festival and musical community (WhistleStop Rock).  I’m looking now to take everything that I’ve learned, and everything that inspires me, to the next level, with this amazing roster of mutually supportive and collaborative bands.”

In addition to the launch of the new label, Red on Red has released 2 new Holiday tracks now available digitally, here is the info:

Berk/Lehane: Simone Berk (Kid Gulliver) and Jerry Lehane (Dogmatics) collaborate to bring you An Irishman for Christmas.  This Boston-Irish-Interfaith-Folk-Punk number tells the tale of a Cleveland transplant to Boston, a girl who longs for a very special Christmas gift — an Irishman to call her own.  Featuring sweeping mandolin by James Young and soaring lead guitar by Billy Loosigian, plus Simone and Jerry’s signature vocal styles, it’s a new holiday classic.

Meanwhile, Justine’s Black Threads bring you a new take on the traditional carol Angels We Have Heard on High. A rollicking rockabilly/bluegrass toboggan ride that evokes the unbridled joy of the season — hold onto your stocking cap for this one, folks.

Red on Red celebrated their launch with a virtual showcase at ONCE VV on November 21st. The streaming show included exclusive, best-of, and rarely seen videos from their artists, including two rarely seen live videos of The Neighborhoods, new videos for best-of-catalog songs by Kid Gulliver, Cold Expectations, and Justine and The Unclean, special guests appearances by The Dogmatics and Mess Around co-hosts Jay Allen (with his band the Archcriminals) and Tom Baker (with his band The Dirty Truckers), and culminating with the exclusive premier of the Red on Red Theme Song and video.

The song was recorded by Justine with David Minehan, Lee Harrington, and Jim Janota, and we made a video that showcases all of the label roster artists and our creative partners. Justine worked with Daniel Ouellette of Meanie Genie to create a crazy fun video. The show wrapped with a live chat/interview with label head Justine and some of her the roster artists, hosted by DJ JoEllen Saunders Yannis of WMFO’s On The Town With Mikey Dee.
