Snuttock’s New Single “Stay (Robot Mix)”

A woman in red is guiding us through grainy imagery and into a dreamscape that is as eerie as it is comforting in the new video for Snuttock’s single “Stay (Robot Mix),” but her role is actually a bit limited in comparison to the sonic virtues inspiring her performance. In the background, a synth-heavy pop melody is taking control of the air around us, filling the room with a gassy harmony that could leave even the most discriminating of critical minds feeling drunk with aural decadence. Snuttock aren’t changing the game in “Stay (Robot Mix),” but that wasn’t their goal – from the looks of it, they’re more than content to spellbind through traditional means than anything forwardly bombastic.

The instrumental components of the mix get a little more volume than the vocal does in the big picture, but they’re also tasked with structuring the mood of the music more than the singer is. This is a texturally expressive slow song without question, and even amidst its most cavalier of beats there’s no room for debating whether or not the presence of the synths is what defines the tone and emotion of the narrative more than any human voice ever could have.

Substantially more stimulating than the similarly-stylized singles I’ve heard in the past few months, Snuttock’s “Stay (Robot Mix)” is a track that teases quite the positive future for this power duo, and I have a feeling it’s going to be a hit in alternative circles (most of which have been enduring a creative dry spell in recent times). “Stay (Robot Mix)” doesn’t exist within the parameters of any specific genre outside of the highly eccentric modern synthpop branding, and I think Snuttock intended for this to be the case. They’re free from labels, and this endears them to modern culture beyond anything else in their artistry.
